Backup Strategy

Strict adherence to a regular backup scheme is essential to maintaining security and confidence at your ACUMEN business site. One missed backup can cost you hours of work. Most likely, ACUMEN is not the only application that you use in your office. You should extend your backup scheme to include all mission-critical data and applications. However, the focus of this section is on the ACUMEN backup plan.

In addition to the following backup recommendations, we ask that you include a CD/DVD burner in your hardware configuration so that your data can be stored in a format we can restore here at ACUMEN Inc. This is extremely important. If it becomes necessary to test or repair your data file, we must have the ability to retrieve your data in a standard format, and sending a CD or DVD to your Support Rep is often a good way to do this.

Hardware
We highly recommend that all ACUMEN sites use LTO or Iomega Rev tape devices for their ACUMEN backup. A scheduled backup to LTO or Rev tape is the most reliable, reasonably priced backup option.

DVD-R is also an effective backup format, although the backup procedure cannot be automated like a tape backup can. CD-ROMs should only be used at businesses where the data file is expected to be very small. Contact your ACUMEN sales representative if you are thinking of using this for backup.

Software
The software you select to perform your backup depends in part on the operating system of the machine you will run it on and in part on the operating systems of the machine(s) you will be backing up. We recommend the following backup applications:

  • Dantz Retrospect©
  • Windows Server© Backup
  • Symantec Backup Exec©
Symantec Backup Exec and Windows Server Backup are both Windows applications. However, Backup Exec can back up Macintosh clients (with additional client purchase) but must be run on a Windows server. Retrospect can be run on either a Macintosh or Windows server and is capable of backing up both platforms as a client.

Schedule
We recommend a full (rather than incremental) backup every night. The minimum tape rotation should be one tape for every day of the week except Friday. On Fridays there should be at least an eight tape rotation. In other words, there would be eight Friday tapes and each Friday tape would be used once every eight weeks. This provides a two month weekly archive. For this strategy, a minimum of sixteen tapes should be purchased. This provides four extra tapes for loss or damage.

We also highly recommend adding a monthly Friday to this rotation, and to archive back up to eighteen months.
