Windows Server Recommendations
ACUMEN requires a dedicated database server - only the Operating System and ACUMEN should be run on the database server. No other applications should be installed on that machine. Virus protection software can only be installed on the ACUMEN database server if it is run in manual mode. In other words, virus software should not be operating on the ACUMEN database server while ACUMEN is running.
Operating System: An ACUMEN server with 6 users or less can use Windows XP Professional or Windows Vista Business. For more than 6 users, Windows Server 2003 or 2008 should be installed.
Many of the configurations below recommend an operating system with 5 Client Access Licenses (CALs) included. Depending on your network and usage, you may need to buy additional CALs. Please see Microsft's CAL Guide for more information: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/sam/lic_cal.mspx
Backup Systems: All configurations below include backup hardware. If you are already using a backup device to backup hard drives on your network, you may not need to purchase a new one. Supported backup hardware and software. CyberWolf recommends Dantz Retrospect or Symantec Backup Exec as the preferred backup software. More on Backup Strategy.
A Surge Protector with Backup Power Supply should be added to any server with critical data.
How to Determine the Server Configuration You Need: The key factors in determining the server configuration you will need are number of users and number of transactions. Transaction level ratings are based on a number of factors, including number of products, customers, credit memos per day and number of invoices per day. The single most indicative is the number of average invoice line items processed a day, so the Transaction Levels used by the following chart
